Corn

I've been told that corn should be "a knee high by the Fourth of July."
If this is so, then our corn is right on schedule.

I've also been told that our Community Center is a former farm, that our ball field sits on the the former corn field and that the corn grown there was legendary. People from 3 counties would seek it out- it was the best corn anyone ever tasted. It seems that a bit of the old magic is still present.

If you know anymore details of this story, please leave a comment or drop me an email.

Volunteers needed, can you help?

Garden Projects for volunteers:

- #1 need now - labor to help build a 3 section compost bin and smaller posts for the bin

- fix chairs and benches that we already have to make them sturdy. Bring your hammer, a few nails and see what you can do

- all chairs and benches need a fresh coat of paint want to paint one or two?

- hole in fence that separates us from sewage plant needs fixing seems the Ground Hogs did a little digging over there

Garden survived the Ground Hogs but the fence didn't!

I was at the garden today and was greeted by two ground hogs. Once they discovered I was there one lumbered towards the tennis courts and the other ran as fast as he could to the compost pile. I checked the garden and no problem that I can see from the little guys but the hole in the fence by the sewage plant looks like some of their handywork.

Volunteers will be at the garden Saturday 9 to noon stop in for a tour or if you want to volunteer a few hours to weed and water Saturday morning is a good time to come for a quick orientation. After that you can work at your convenience.

This Saturday is the day we mulch 9:00 to 12:00...all are welcome!

Another heat wave with temperatures over 100 degrees today and the garden thrives. Many thanks to you who water, your efforts are much appreciated.

June has been hot but July and August could be an even bigger challenge for the vegetables and flowers. If you have newspapers and cardboard to donate for mulching please bring them to the garden this Saturday, June 27 from 9am to 12 noon, and if you like help us with the mulching. Can't come Saturday? You can leave them anytime under the roof by the garden.

Thanks much!
